Cybersecurity – Fact or Fiction

This session will feature a fireside chat between Supervisory Special Agent Ron Manuel (who leads the FBI's Los Angeles Cyber Task Force) and Susan Kohn Ross (who Chair's MSK's Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Practice Group). Topics to be discussed include:

  • Latest means and methods used by hackers to get into your systems;
  • Can/should you pay the ransomware demanded;
  • Helpful hints regarding ways your company can minimize the likelihood of the hackers' success;
  • What you need to provide to the FBI when you ask for their help;
  • Best practices to prepare for a hack and how you can minimize the impact.

Meet the Speakers

Susan Ross

Partner, Regulatory Practice Chair, Cybersecurity and Privacy Practice Chair | MSK

Susan Kohn Ross is a Partner at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP (MSK) and a resident in the Los Angeles office. She chairs the Regulatory Practice, where she focuses on compliance, whether dealing with Cybersecurity/Privacy, International Trade, or COVID-19, and deals with the related regulatory, civil, and criminal issues.

Regarding International Trade, Ms. Ross represents domestic and foreign companies, in both the administrative and commercial context, regarding the importation and exportation of goods before U.S. Customs and Border Protection and other federal and state courts and agencies that regulate the flow of goods, addressing a wide berth of related topics, along with regulatory investigations; international contracts; international litigation and alternative dispute resolution; Foreign Corrupt Practices Act compliance, and other anti-corruption/anti-bribery regimes.

Ms. Ross also chairs MSK’s Cybersecurity and Privacy Practice, having come to cybersecurity issues in 2002 when these challenges started in earnest. She has been tracking the developing landscape since its infancy, making her among the foremost professionals on the topic. In addition to the security challenges, she deals with disclosure requirements and government enforcement and works with clients to respond to the daily threats facing their organizations.

Given her broad knowledge of the interplay between regulations and business, when the COVID-19 virus hit, Ms. Ross turned her attention to this ever-changing challenge. She regularly works with MSK colleagues to provide clients with a holistic approach to addressing the fast-changing challenges now focused on working from home and reopening.

Ron Manuel

Supervisory Special Agent,  Leads FBI Los Angeles Cyber Task Force | FBI

Supervisory Special Agent (SSA) Ron Manuel leads the FBI Los Angeles Cyber Task Force comprised of Special Agents, State and Local Task Force Officers, Intelligence Analysts, Computer Scientists, and other support staff. The Task Force investigates criminal cyber activity impacting the greater Los Angeles area and imposes consequences on those criminals.

SSA Manuel has also led international terrorism investigations and previously ran FBI LA's training program for new special agents. Prior to his employment with the FBI, he was a supply chain planner for Motorola, Inc. and a U.S. Army Officer with multiple deployments. SSA Manuel received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from Drexel University.
